Is there Lead in Your Cookware?

I’ve heard some imported cookware has high levels of lead. How do I know if mine does – and what should I do?

The short answer: Check the list and recommendations here!

The explanation: FDA has issued a warning that some imported cookware may leach significant levels of lead into food. The products of concern (listed here) are made from aluminum, brass, and aluminum alloys and are primarily from India but also sold in US stores.

The issue was detected through testing by FDA and its states partners, which showed the potential to leach lead under conditions that simulated their use in contact with food. This is particularly of concern for young children, women of child-bearing age, and those who are breastfeeding, who may be at higher risk after eating food cooked using these products.

Many of the products have been recalled, but you may have them in your home, and it is possible that some may still be on retail shelves.

What should you do?

  • Check the list to determine if you have any of products of concern.
  • Discard any of these you have; do not donate or refurbish this cookware.
  • Check the list prior to purchasing imported cookware of this type, as FDA will update it if further cookware is found to be of concern.
  • If you have concerns about lead exposure or elevated levels of lead, contact your health care provider.
