Your Environmental Monitoring (EM) program is only as good as what you’re actually trying to find and why. EM is your best tool for verifying that Listeria controls are working. When you swab with the intent to find Listeria if it’s there, you generate real signal: gaps in cleaning execution, equipment that harbors risk, conditions that won’t fix themselves. This is the kind of data that drives improvement on the plant floor.
But when you get a positive, what happens next matters as much as the finding itself: a positive result is not the “seek” in seek and destroy. Before you remediate, investigate; look at what the environment is telling you. Identify the contamination source and the transfer vectors. Only then will your corrective actions hold.
