Steven Gendel

Senior Advisor, Food Safety

Dr. Steven Gendel’s experience includes over two decades of working on science and policy in the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). He was the first FDA Food Allergen Coordinator, and contributed to the Preventive Controls for Human Foods Rule, the Gluten-Free Labeling Rule, and multiple agency documents. He also provided support to FDA inspection and enforcement programs. He is an internationally recognized expert on safety assessments for novel food proteins. 

As part of the TAG team, Steven works with food producers to provide practical support for understanding and meeting regulatory requirements and quality standards. He likes to work with companies and individuals who are developing innovative products and ingredients. He is a perceptive analyst, an engaging communicator, and a creative problem solver.

Steven holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology. He has advanced training in risk assessment, food law, HACCP, and Preventive Controls. He has been an instructor in programs organized by FDA, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), state agencies, and the National Center for Food Safety and Technology (now IFSH). 

Steven works from the Washington D.C. area. When he is not working, he likes to read modern science fiction.
