After three recalls of nut-containing products from a Michigan-based distributor within six weeks, the FDA issued a warning letter. The finding noted that food allergen controls at the packaging/labeling step were not adequately identified and implemented, as evidenced by the three recalls. The FDA noted that it will verify implementation of any corrective actions during its next inspection.
The three recalls were all due to allergen mislabeling, because the nut product in the container was not accurately declared on the container’s label (e.g., a product labeled as walnuts also had cashews in the product, though cashews were not declared). Because nuts are among the nine major food allergens, each type must be declared on the product label. Thus, it is critical that establishments have effective food allergen management programs to ensure against cross contact and proper labeling.
