The long awaited final publication of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations has come on June 13, 2018. This is the most comprehensive revision of the food regulatory framework in Canadian history and will have broad implications for the food industry in Canada and for exporters to Canada and importers of Canadian food products. The Government of Canada has announced that while the regulations are now in place, they will not come into effect until January 15, 2019 to allow for industry to be prepared for implementation. There have been some changes to the original proposed regulations since they were first published in January 2017. However, these changes are relatively minor and do not impact on overall structure and intent. The pillars of the new regulations are Mandatory Licensing of most food processing, importing and exporting operations; Traceability, and Preventive Controls. For many food operations, these requirements are already being wholly or partly met, however, some sectors will need to build systems from scratch to meet these regulations. It will be critical for food companies particularly in the US and Canada to assess their readiness for implementation and to develop action plans to meet the new regulatory requirements.
