Freeman Libby

Director, Food Safety

Freeman Libby has over 45+ years of experience in a variety of areas within the food safety spectrum. He has extensive knowledge in food regulatory programs (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency): 3rd party certification auditing specializing in seafood, food commercial sterility, and meat and poultry processing; food safety government program analysis and food safety system program reviews. He also has international experience performing seafood inspection program reviews in Peru, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Freeman retired from the CFIA in 2009 as National Director of the Feed Ban Task Force, where through a collaborative approach with the 10 provinces and the national industry associations, he was responsible for developing and implementing federal regulations and controls to eliminate “Mad Cow” (BSE) disease in Canada. 

Freeman has a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Animal Biology from the University of New Brunswick. 

Freeman is a certified lead auditor for BRCGS and FSSC 22000 and has performed over 200 BRCGS food audits and 50 FSSC Audits. Additional certifications include HACCP, Seafood HACCP, PCQI for Human Food, BRCGS ATP trainer, and Lead Auditor. He specializes in food safety program reviews, assisting the food processing industry in food safety program development and implementation, assisting food processors and importers on Canadian regulatory requirements, and providing solution-based guidance to the food processing industry.  

Freeman lives in Nova Scotia, Canada, known for its many sandy beaches with invigorating waters and tasty lobster. He loves to kayak, run, bicycle, and take short tours on his motorcycle.
